Welcome to Open Heart Arts Theatre

Through community-engaged collaboration, we create performances that connect and inspire.

What we’re up to.

  • Show Home

Show Home is our current project. Since 2022, we’ve been collaborating with people with disabilities who live in long-term care and the professionals who support them, all in preparation for a performance coming to you in Spring 2024.

  • Artist-in-Residence Program

We recently launched the pilot of an artist-in-residence proramming, providing mentorship, fees, and resources to artists creating in the community. Meet our innagural artist-in-residence, Carlyn Rhamey!

  • Arrivals Legacy Voice

An opportunity for performers, writers, singers, educators, change leaders, and artists of all disciplines to come together in a collaborative space for cross-cultural exchange and performative story-making, exploring where their ancestral histories meet.

Where we are.

We work in Hamilton, Ontario on the traditional territories of the Erie, Attawandaron (Neutral), Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee and Mississaugas. This land is covered by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabek to share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes.

Recognizing the history of the land is one way of honouring the lives and stories of Indigenous people who have been living and working here from time immemorial, but it’s just one small action in a larger story of reconciliation. Here and now, Open Heart shares this commitment to care for this land and the people who live here. We do this by being intentional with how and who we work with, challenging traditional colonial methods of theatre making, and making environment-conscious choices whenever possible.
