I am a Theatre Maker, a Set and Costume designer and an Artist Educator who is interested in exploring the ways that design can augment the theatrical experience. Having created designs for many theatres across Canada, my most recent work is in site-specific theatre creation.

I am inspired by the people I encounter everyday.  I want to know what my responsibility is as an artist. How am I supposed to respond?  The fear of the unknown challenges me to face things head on; fear that I don’t know enough about what is going on, that I will fail to respond truthfully, that I will layer in my own judgement, and my inner critic that asks ‘who am I to think that I should tell this story’.   The work with Open Heart is my response to what I see happening in my city. 

I am a determined dreamer and explorer.  I strive to value the humanity in all that I meet and to meet each person with kindness.  Every single person is born an artist, and all people have stories worth sharing.  Knowing that even one person might understand you gives you power, strength, and pride.

Lately, I have been thinking about how we make theatre together. Through my creative work I am attempting to break down barriers of space and examine questions around who belongs in that space.  Traditional theatre settings come with inherent barriers around cost, culture, and physical space.  As a settler of European descent, I believe that part of my role in community is dismantling traditional structures that exist to continue to benefit a few to the exclusion of many.  As a site specific theatre maker I value the opportunity to work outside of these margins and to create my own framework. 

Rose is an artist and producer with a decade of experience working in Hamilton. She’s a graduate of Generator’s Artist Producer Training Program and has worked with the Hamilton Festival Theatre Company, Industry, Aeris Körper, and others. She has been a member of Theatre Aquarius' Junction program for theatre creators, Women's Work playwriting circle, Theatre Ontario's Professional Theatre Training Program for directing, and has received the City of Hamilton Arts Award for Emerging Theatre Artist. In addition to her work with Open Heart, Rose currently serves as the Operations Coordinator for Spiderwebshow and the Festival of Live Digital Art.
