Wahkohtowin

Wahkohtowin is a community-engaged arts and knowledge-sharing project centered on a three-dimensional turtle installation inspired by the Cree concept of wahkohtowin: the understanding that we are all related and connected through our relationships with one another, the land, the waters, and all living beings. The project invites community members to reflect on the teaching that we live on Turtle Island and our shared responsibility to live in right relationship with Mother Earth.

Through Indigenous knowledge, storytelling, visual art, music, and community participation, Wahkohtowin creates opportunities for learning, healing, and collective reflection. The turtle installation serves as both a visual and interactive gathering place where participants can engage with traditional teachings and contribute their own intentions for restoring and strengthening relationships with the land.

Community Engagement Event

You’re invited into the creative process!

As the Wahkohtowin turtle installation nears completion, join us for an Open Studio Day where four artists will work collaboratively on the installation.

Visitors are welcome to drop by throughout the day to observe the artistic process, ask questions, and engage in meaningful conversations about the symbolism, teachings, and intentions behind the artwork. Open Heart will also have some hands-on activities available as part of the day!

Make sunflower seed bombs using airdry clay, potting mix and seeds, or decorate your own turtle cutout with colours and seeds from squash, corn and beans
